Newton Booth Tarkington was best known for his gently comedic treatment of the differences between the classes. Winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, he is considered one of the Midwest's most influential artists. Born in 1869, Tarkington knew both wealth and poverty. A world traveler until his health failed, he enjoyed a residence in Kennebunkport, Maine, in addition to his home in Indianapolis. He died in 1946 following a two-month illness.
